Philip Ryland

PHILIP RYLAND

Philip Ryland studied sculpture at Staffordshire University but has concentrated on painting for the last two decades. His work has been shown both in the UK and internationally and he has completed commissions, both to private and corporate clients, around the UK. He is currently the Head of Art and Design Technology at a local school but maintains his practice, often drawing and painting early in the morning in his studio at home in Farnham.

Philip’s work is inspired by nature, from the landscape of local heathland to the gardens of Kew and Wisley and his own collection of house plants.  His latest body of work has been heavily inspired by visits to gardens around parts of the country, particularly in Cornwall last summer where he amassed a large collection of source material to work with.  Drawing and photography are central to his practice and through numerous studies of the same image, Philip will choose where the final piece can sit between figuration and abstraction.

His larger paintings are primarily acrylic on canvas, with occasional use of pencil. His smaller works typically employ pencil, coloured pencil, or ink on paper. Regardless of the medium or final artwork, his distinctive approach to mark making—whether in paint, ink, or pencil—creates a cohesive body of work.  Notably, the drawn elements and the use of pencil serve as a central unifying factor across his pieces.
