LUCY DOROTHY NICHOLS

Lucy Dorothy Nichols is an award-winning contemporary paper artist based in North Hampshire.  Prior to pursuing a creative path, Lucy graduated from Imperial College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and subsequently embarked on a successful career in IT management.  In 2013, she sought to reconcile her lifelong passion for making with formal training by completing an art foundation. During these studies, she discovered a love for working with paper and has been exploring its endless possibilities ever since.  Lucy’s work is frequently exhibited in galleries throughout the UK, and she was recently recognised as Surrey Artist of the Year 2023-24.

At the heart of Lucy’s work is a love of storytelling - particularly stories that challenge the boundaries between what is believable and what is not.  For this exhibition Lucy has created new work around the theme of garden parties, holidays, summer picnics and village competitions, conjuring up intricate paper sculptures with a whimsical and playful spirit.

Many of the papers incorporated into Lucy’s work have had a previous life - whether they are treasured keepsakes holding cherished memories, a discarded scrap of wrapping paper, or the inside of an old envelope. The process of selecting just the right paper for each element, through origami, papier-mâché, collage, or delicate cutting and folding, brings her great joy, and infuses each piece with a sense of history and narrative.
